The Bill of Rights |
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
In the wake of the senseless killing of 20 small children and 6 adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., politicizing the tragedy began within hours after the incident ocurred. The liberal media and politicians led the charge as usual as they did after the the April 20, 1999, shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado where 12 students and one teacher were gunned down, or the the Virginia Tech school shooting that took place on April 16, 2007, killing 32 people and other such incidents.
President Obama is using the bully pulpit to push for stronger gun control measures, but he has flip-flopped somewhat in the past on the issue. Jennifer Bendery recently wrote in the Huffingtonpost.com that 'Obama was a vocal advocate of gun control in his early days as an Illinois politician, and during his term in the U.S. Senate, he routinely backed gun control bills. It wasn't until he became president that he went quiet on the matter; in fact, the only two gun measures he's signed into law actually expanded gun rights.'
