Remember When Life Was....Different?

Back in the day....how different things were when these guys were dominating the music world.
The Beatles, for those too young to know,  were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. By 1964 they were international stars and led the so-called British invasion of pop music in the United States.

How does 1964 stack up to the year just past: 2012?

Inflation
       $1 of 1964 dollars was worth $7.41 in 2012
$1 of 2012 dollars would be worth $0.14 in 1964

National Debt

    12/31/1964                       $317,940,472,718.38 *
   12/31/2012                  $16,432,730,050,569.00 **

Consider:
In 1964, when the Beatles came to the U.S. a new home was around $16,500. A first class stamp was just 4 cents. You could fill up a standard tank for around $6.00 because gas was only 31 cents a gallon! Eggs were 57 cents a dozen and a gallon a milk was about 50 cents.

Today, average price of a new home is $304,000. A first class stamp is 46 cents. Gas is now averaging $3.36 a gallon nationally. A dozen eggs today is about $1.90 and a gallon of milk is around $3.70.

We were at war in 1964, Vietnam was ramping up. Today we're mired in America's longest war in the Middle East and the continuing War on Terror.

Forty-nine years from now, in 2062, will there be another  British Beatle-like music invasion of the U.S. and will people then think how simpler it was back in 2013? Will we even still be here? Hmmm...Just a thought.
