UPDATE: Media Ignores Mental Health Side of Shootings
UPDATE: White House Pushes Gun Control
No one doubted that within hours of the shooting in Newton, Conn. cries for tougher gun control legislation from the liberal left and their accomplices in the media would be heard. Before the dead of 20 young children and 6 adults were removed from the elementary school where the shooting occurred it was being politicized. President Obama also joined the chorus.

For my part, I have no problem banning these types of weapons. No one, other than the military's special operations units such as the Navy SEALS and the Army's Delta Force, or perhaps police SWAT Team units has a need for one.
But, take away the average citizen's right to own a handgun or non-assault rifle for his or her individual/family protection...there I have a problem. There is a caveat to getting rid of guns, even select models. Criminals don't get there guns at they're local gun store. They either steal them or get them off the black market, thus the phrase "take away guns and only criminals will have guns." You can ban assault weapons all you want, but a criminal set on doing harm will have access to them.
President Obama is considering gun-control legislation that goes beyond reinstating a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, sources tell The Washington Post. Read More: Tougher Gun Measures Looming
After the Newtown shooting, I Tweeted that if President Obama wanted to make GOOD use of stimulus money he should propose a federal program to put an armed police resource officer in EVERY school. Money that would be well spent. There are those that oppose that idea and those that support it.
Then there are those that say we should arm teachers! What? Bad Idea! Teachers are there to teach, not participate in shoot-em-ups. Asking teachers to respond to an armed lunatic hell-bent on blowing people away is asinine. No amount of training would put a teacher, man or woman, in the proper mental perspective at a moments notice to effectively react to an armed gunman. A police officer, on the other hand, is trained, mentally and physically for these types of incidents. It's part of their mindset. Additionally, should an incident occur a cop is in immediate radio contact with his department. Additional officers would respond in seconds. It might take the school 3 minutes or more to realize what was happening before calling 911. Time lost...lives lost.
A teacher with a gun might exacerbate a situation and only make it worse. Should a teacher accidentally shoot a student in the process of trying to out-duel an intruder with a gun, then the outcry would be to take guns away from teachers. And where would a teacher conceal a weapon. Male teachers can hide it under a sport coat. Female teachers......? A two shot derringer strapped to her thigh by a garter? I don't thinks so. To their credit a number of teachers unions are speaking out against arming teachers.
Another quick thought...and a dangerous one...kids being kids and knowing Miss Math Teacher has a gun...they find where she keeps it...and now it's in the hands of......kids!
Leave the police to protecting...leave the teachers to teaching...students and teachers would be a lot safer...parents will feel better sending their children off to school each day.
